UK 61 - 65 Great Queen Street London, WC2B 5DA, GB
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 47th anniversary of ambassadorial-level diplomatic relations between China and the UK. As such, it represents a valuable opportunity for the deepening of ties in the current “Golden Era” of China-UK relations. At this historic juncture, the UK stands to benefit from opportunities brought on by China’s consumption upgrade and supply-side structural reform, the wider opening of the Chinese market, and the Belt and Road Initiative. As both technology and business models continue to evolve, the changing landscape of the global industrial chain will undoubtedly create unprecedented opportunities for co-operation between Chinese and the UK businesses.
After four decades of sustained development, China is currently evolving from “the factory of the world” to “the market of the world” as its population of 1.4 billion is re-imagined as consumers instead of labourers. Led by the growing purchasing power of consumers as well as technological innovation, China’s increasing domestic consumption will benefit companies and brands worldwide. On October 2, 2019, more than 250 scholars, entrepreneurs and senior executives from China and the UK will gather in London for the CEIBS Insights UK Forum to offer their insights into new opportunities for the UK created by China’s consumption upgrade. As “China Essence, Global Significance” is the new tagline of CEIBS 25th anniversary, this event is expected to facilitate industrial collaboration and integration, and advance cooperation among the political, business and academic communities from both China and the UK.

A New Order for Consumption Upgrade: The Chinese Market and Opportunities for the UK
Amidst a wave of consumption upgrade driven by urbanisation and demographic dividend, China’s new generation of consumers are dominating the market, while espousing views that stand in stark contrast to those of their predecessors. In particular, they are no longer obsessed with price comparisons or big brands, but instead desire the pursuit of individuality, quality, and consumer experience. This shift in consumer demand represents new opportunities for long-established UK brands capable of technological innovation and their success in the Chinese market will hinge on whether they can tune in to the needs of this new, younger generation.
